WHAT IS AN OPEN-TOP MUD TANK?

An open-top mud tank, also called a cuttings tank, shaker tank, or solids control tank, is used to hold and circulate drilling fluids that clean, cool, and stabilize the well during operations. Earlier versions were simple pits dug into the ground, once known as “mud pits.”

Flat Bottom Tanks

Our flat-bottom tanks hold the greatest volume and can handle liquids or solids during the solids control process. Depending on the project, this option may reduce the number of tanks required on site. The stable, flat-base design also allows easy access for cleanout and long-term site use.

Slope Bottom Tanks

Our slope-bottom tanks are ideal for placement beneath drying or shale shakers. The sloped interior promotes gravity-based drainage, guiding mud toward the suction line for transfer to other processing equipment before being reintroduced into the active mud system. A V-bottom configuration is also available for applications requiring faster cleanout and more complete drainage.

Round Bottom Tanks

Our round-bottom tanks are optimal for holding either liquids or solids during the solids control process. The smooth, curved design provides full drainage and easy removal of materials with a track hoe, making it suitable for mixing, jetting, or haul-off and disposal. Optional agitation can be included for specialized operations.

✓ Placed Beneath Shale Shakers

These tanks sit directly below the shale shakers to capture drill cuttings and return fluids. As drilling mud flows over the shaker screens, solids are separated while reusable fluid is collected in the tank for further processing.

Each tank supports vital solids control components such as degassers, desanders, desilters, centrifuges, and mud agitators. Together, they remove fine solids and maintain consistent mud properties throughout drilling operations.
