OPEN TOP TANK RENTALS
Consistent solids control keeps your drilling fluids balanced and your wellsite running smoothly. The right tanks make all the difference.
Panther Fluids supplies open-top tanks designed for drilling operations across Texas and major U.S. basins. Choose from slope-bottom, flat-bottom, and round-bottom designs built for solids and fluid management.
Let the Big Cats keep your solids control system running smoothly.
WHAT IS AN OPEN-TOP MUD TANK?
An open-top mud tank, also called a cuttings tank, shaker tank, or solids control tank, is used to hold and circulate drilling fluids that clean, cool, and stabilize the well during operations. Earlier versions were simple pits dug into the ground, once known as “mud pits.”
Panther Fluids provides engineered steel tanks built for drilling rigs and advanced solids control systems. Each tank delivers consistent fluid storage and supports the continuous reuse of drilling mud throughout the drilling phase.

Key features include:
-
Open-top access for easy monitoring and maintenance
-
Heavy-duty steel construction for durability in harsh conditions
-
Options for internal agitation and fluid circulation
-
Slope, flat, or round-bottom designs for specialized solids handling
-
Cleanout and transfer connections for quick turnaround between jobs
MUD TANK OPTIONS AVAILABLE
Panther Fluids offers three open-top tank designs to support efficient solids control and fluid recovery across drilling operations. Each design helps manage cuttings and fluids from drying shakers, centrifuges, and other equipment on drilling rigs.
Our flat-bottom tanks hold the greatest volume and can handle liquids or solids during the solids control process. Depending on the project, this option may reduce the number of tanks required on site. The stable, flat-base design also allows easy access for cleanout and long-term site use.
- High-capacity storage for liquids or cuttings
- Suitable for large or extended drilling projects
- Stable design ideal for long-term operations
- Easy cleanout and access for vacuum truck removal
- Reduces the total number of tanks needed on location

Our slope-bottom tanks are ideal for placement beneath drying or shale shakers. The sloped interior promotes gravity-based drainage, guiding mud toward the suction line for transfer to other processing equipment before being reintroduced into the active mud system. A V-bottom configuration is also available for applications requiring faster cleanout and more complete drainage.
- Positioned beneath drying or shale shakers
- Promotes efficient mud flow and drainage
- Faster cleanout than flat-bottom designs
- Reinforced steel construction for durability
- Supports continuous solids control and mud recovery

Our round-bottom tanks are optimal for holding either liquids or solids during the solids control process. The smooth, curved design provides full drainage and easy removal of materials with a track hoe, making it suitable for mixing, jetting, or haul-off and disposal. Optional agitation can be included for specialized operations.
- Full-drainage round-bottom design
- Smooth interior simplifies mixing and cleaning
- Compatible with mixing or jetting applications
- Optional agitation available
- Easy material transfer between tanks or for disposal

HOW ARE OPEN-TOP MUD TANKS USED?
Open-top mud tanks are essential for managing drilling fluids and solids during active well operations. They serve as the foundation of the solids control system, supporting fluid recovery, cuttings handling, and environmental compliance at every stage of drilling.
✓ Placed Beneath Shale Shakers
These tanks sit directly below the shale shakers to capture drill cuttings and return fluids. As drilling mud flows over the shaker screens, solids are separated while reusable fluid is collected in the tank for further processing.
✓ Integrated with Solids Control Equipment
Each tank supports vital solids control components such as degassers, desanders, desilters, centrifuges, and mud agitators. Together, they remove fine solids and maintain consistent mud properties throughout drilling operations.
✓ Supports Closed-Loop Systems
After separation, treated drilling fluids are pumped from the tanks back into the active mud system. This closed-loop process improves mud quality, minimizes waste, and reduces overall fluid costs on site.
✓ Used with Vacuum Trucks for Haul-Off and Disposal
Open-top tanks are commonly paired with vacuum trucks to remove drill cuttings and residual fluids efficiently. This process keeps the site organized and compliant with environmental regulations.
✓ Keep Wellsites Running Smoothly
Panther Fluids designs and maintains open-top tank systems that simplify fluids management, improve efficiency, and support safe, environmentally responsible drilling operations.
