Oil-based drilling fluids, also called oil-based muds or OBMs, typically use petroleum-derived oil as the external phase. In an invert emulsion system, brine is dispersed within that oil phase. These systems provide shale inhibition and lubricity and are commonly used in high-temperature wells. Their performance depends on the formulation and how the fluid is maintained throughout drilling.
