# When to Choose Synthetic-Based Drilling Fluids

[Previous](https://www.thepanthercompanies.com/blog/solution-non-aqueous-drilling-fluids)

<https://www.thepanthercompanies.com/blog>

The lowest-priced drilling fluid may not produce the lowest well cost. A fluid that slows drilling or leaves the wellbore unstable can add rig time and remedial work.

Operators should consider synthetic-based mud (SBM) when a water-based mud (WBM) system cannot provide enough lubricity or shale inhibition, and a qualified synthetic fluid better meets environmental requirements than traditional oil-based mud (OBM). The added fluid cost should be weighed against potential savings in drilling time, fluid recovery, and haul-off and disposal.

That tradeoff can look very different from one well to the next.

In this article, we’ll look at:

- Which well conditions make SBM worth considering.
- When environmental requirements change the fluid choice.
- Where WBM or traditional OBM may make better economic sense.
- How Panther selects and manages a fluid system throughout the job.

### Which Drilling Conditions Favor Synthetic-Based Mud?

Long laterals, water-sensitive shale, and demanding temperature and pressure conditions each give operators a reason to evaluate SBM.

### **Long Laterals and Extended-Reach Wells**

On a long lateral, friction can become the constraint that determines how efficiently the well advances. Torque and drag affect drillstring rotation and movement. A properly formulated [nonaqueous drilling fluid](https://www.thepanthercompanies.com/blog/solution-non-aqueous-drilling-fluids) can supply lubricity to help manage those loads.

As reported in [Drilling Contractor](https://drillingcontractor.org/advanced-oil-based-synthetic-muds-enable-deeper-hotter-wells-17117), engineered water-based systems have also performed successfully in extended-lateral wells. Lateral length is one factor in the decision, alongside shale reactivity and expected torque and drag.

### **Water-Sensitive Shale**

In water-sensitive shale, the concern is how long the formation will remain stable during fluid exposure. Shale inhibition helps limit interactions that weaken the formation, supporting wellbore stability through drilling and casing installation.

### **High-Pressure, High-Temperature Conditions**

Temperature and pressure narrow the options further. The complete formulation must maintain suitable flow and suspension properties under anticipated conditions. Not every synthetic-based mud system is suitable for high-pressure, high-temperature wells.

At Panther, we tailor our drilling fluid systems and [specialty fluid additives](https://www.thepanthercompanies.com/products#add) to those requirements.

### Which Drilling Conditions Favor Synthetic-Based Mud?

The fluid choice also affects how mud and cuttings are managed at the surface.

A qualified synthetic formulation may provide nonaqueous-fluid performance with lower toxicity or improved biodegradability than traditional oil-based mud. Before selecting a system, operators need to confirm:

- Whether the formulation meets applicable toxicity and biodegradation criteria.
- How cuttings will be treated and disposed of
- What the location’s regulations and permit conditions allow.

For offshore operations, [EPA guidance](https://www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/2020-06/documents/sbf_k_factor_memo.pdf) addresses sediment toxicity and biodegradation criteria for synthetic-based drilling fluid discharges. Selecting SBM does not automatically authorize discharge. EPA’s [effluent guidelines](https://www.epa.gov/eg/oil-and-gas-extraction-effluent-guidelines-documents-synthetic-drilling-fluids-and-coastal) also distinguish offshore, coastal, and onshore operations, so a disposal plan that works at one location may not be appropriate at another.

Closed-loop drilling systems and [solids control services](https://www.thepanthercompanies.com/solids-control) support fluid recovery, while coordinated [haul-off and disposal](https://www.thepanthercompanies.com/haul-off-disposal) address the remaining fluids and solids. At Panther, we include those services in pre-job planning, alongside mud system selection.

### When Do WBM or Traditional OBM Make More Economic Sense?

If WBM or traditional OBM meets the well’s drilling and environmental requirements at a lower total well cost, it may be the better choice. Any additional expense for SBM should be supported by expected improvements in drilling performance or lower costs elsewhere in the program.

An engineered WBM system can provide the shale inhibition and lubricity the well requires. Traditional OBM may remain appropriate where it has performed reliably, and its use meets applicable environmental regulations, permit conditions, and disposal requirements.

Lost circulation, the loss of drilling fluid into the formation, can change that calculation. Every barrel lost requires replacement, so a higher fluid price becomes more consequential as losses increase. According to [Drilling Contractor](https://drillingcontractor.org/advances-in-high-performance-drilling-fluids-enhance-wellbore-strength-help-curb-loss-6426), well complexity and fluid replacement costs both influence mud system selection.

The choice can be summarized by what the well needs and what each system requires the operator to verify:

| **SYSTEM** | **BEST FIT** | **CHECK BEFORE CHOOSING** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **WBM** | The well needs stability and lubricity that an engineered water-based system can provide.. | Drilling performance and total well cost. |
| **OBM** | TThe well needs nonaqueous performance, and traditional oil-based mud is suitable for the site.. | Environmental requirements and disposal costs. |
| **SBM** | The well needs nonaqueous performance, and a qualified synthetic formulation better meets environmental requirements. | Permit conditions and added fluid cost. |

For each system, compare fluid purchase and replacement, dilution, rig time, fluid recovery, and haul-off and disposal. SBM may justify a higher purchase price when it helps avoid enough drilling delays or remedial work to reduce the overall cost of the well.

### How Does Panther Build the Fluid Program Around the Well?

Panther starts with the well design, formation, and drilling goals. Our [drilling fluids management team](https://www.thepanthercompanies.com/drilling-fluids-management) uses those details to recommend a WBM, OBM, or SBM system and plan the additives, equipment, solids control, and disposal services the job requires.

Once drilling begins, our engineers monitor mud properties and adjust the system as downhole conditions change. Integrated solids control helps recover fluid and reduce dilution, while our team coordinates haul-off and disposal.
